About

Scotch eggs are back, popping up in all kinds of venues around London, but there’s no better way to have one than with a pint of ale in a pub.

I’ll be trotting around London, trying the offerings and giving them a rating; along with marks for the beer of course.

The rated categories will include: crispiness, egg consistency, filling flavour and value for money.

Queen Adelaide, Shepherds Bush. Crunch 4. Egg 3. Filling 3.

A nice little pub with church benches at the side with an open kitchen to the rear. This pub did have great food but is on the decline.

The crunch was just about there but it felt a little old. The egg was not runny and lacked taste. The filli

ng was bland unfortunately and it seems no effort was made to season it.

Not a fan of this one, easy enough to correct I think though. I’m told things will improve food wise very soon. 3.3/10. £4

This is ‘The Scotch EGG Hunt’.

I love a good scotch egg in its finest form, a shell crispy on the outside, then a juicy layer of what is usually pork and a beautifully runny golden egg within.

For a long time they were stuck on supermarket shelves and in petrol stations, served chilled and from a package. They were usually a bit mushy with no real texture, with no sign of crunch and a hard boiled egg inside it all.

Pubs all around London are doing their bit and bringing it back, well actually, it is back. It seems to be the thing of the moment, where you can go to many an establishment and find one there, sat in among the snack items on menus. A great thing about them is there value. Due to its past, I think they have become very much an undervalued item. If they had just been invented now they would be a lot more expensive as they are exceptionally tasty, filling and very, very time consuming to make. They are often seen on sale at around £4, a pinch considering all that.

Now I want to find the best offerings available in London, so every pub I go to that has one, I’ll be documenting its quality, and hopefully we’ll be able to create a map of where to go for a top notch scotch egg.
